Cat Food Portion Calculator

Estimate how many calories and how much dry or wet food your cat needs each day, based on weight, age, and activity.

Check the calories on your cat food's label and enter them above. Dry food is often about 350-550 kcal per cup; a small 3 oz can of wet food is often about 70-100 kcal.

How it works

The calculator uses the standard veterinary formula for resting energy requirement (70 × body weight in kg0.75) and multiplies it by a factor for life stage and activity. Cats use lower factors than dogs: neutered adults 1.2, intact adults 1.4, active adults 1.6, seniors 1.0, and kittens 2.0 to 2.5.

It then divides by the calories in a cup of dry food, or a can of wet food, to give a daily amount. Treats count too, so reduce meals a little if you give many. Cats should only lose weight slowly and with a vet's guidance.
